I have 1981 and 1984 two-volume sets and the 1995 single volume of Pub #9
and find that the late 1980's two-volume sets are excellent for traditional
celestial mathematics and current up to date reference data. The "1995" is
still very good for reference. However, it does not appear to be as
comprehensive, especially as depicted in the Volume II's explanations of
formulas and calculations used to compute the tables. Volume II also
appears, as an example, to have detailed discussions regarding the
mathematics used in Spherical Triangles and some of the "corrections". Of
course, Pub 229 also has good discussions on this subject.
My yellow sticky markers in the 1984 sets, 1995, and other references seems
to grow each year as I continue my navigation practice. In my opinion, no
single reference has all the guidance that we sometimes seek. However, the
late 1980s Vol I & Vol II sets are leading.

I own a few earlier éditions of Bowditch and many friends who have the 1995
edition and only that one knock on my door often for the extras the older
editions offer.
