Sun sights and retinal scars

Subject: Sun sights and retinal scars

I have an eye exam coming up on Wednesday and I'll specifically ask
the ophthalmologist check for signs of retinal scarring. I've used 4x
and 6x scopes for sun sights and used pre-computed altitudes, bringing
the sun down to the horizon, and just plain estimates to do sun sights
with a variety of sextants. While saiors using cross-staffs and other
devices requiring direct observation certainly were at great risk,
common sense in using modern sextants and their filters reduces the
likelihood of problems significantly.
