Sextants in Coastal Piloting

Subject: Sextants in Coastal Piloting
From: Russell Sher (rsher@XXX.XXX)

Hi Carl - I run a sailing school in Cape Town and we teach sextant use for
our coastal and Yacht Master courses. Topics covered are vertical and
horizontal sextant angles. A short explanation of the sextant use is
covered, often with some practical handling.
When this topic is covered, I mention that it is part of the navigator's
'toolbox' of skills. In practice it is unlikely that many (or any) of the
students will even use the technique. (Many students ask why it is being
covered.)
