I like to keep a couple of minutes error on the arc at all times. If one
tries to adjust the error out completely, with changes in ambient
temperature, etc, the instrument could easily end up with an error off the
arc. I find that the step of having to read the drum and subtract from 80'
to find the error is one extra place to mess up. Since I don't need any
more of those, I like to stick with the positive error, which is simple
enough to subtract from the sextant height.
