Geoffrey ...
This has little to do with navigation, but maybe you can point me in the
right direction for some information.
I recently purchased the Nathaniel Bowditch, a boat that was built in 1949
by Whitby Shipyard, Whitby, Yorkshire, England. The boat is a "North Sea
Trawler" configuration with an LOA of 60' and beam of 17'. I am trying to
trace the boat's history and have not been able to find anyone who knows
anything about the Whitby shipyard, which appears to be out of business
today. The boat was brought to the US in 1969 and was documented in Dublin,
Ireland at that time. Since 1969 it has been in Southern California.
Do you know anything about the Whitby Shipyard or know who I could contact
that would know the history? Would tracing the documentation process
through Dublin be the best route to take?
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

As some on this list have pointed out, observation of celestial bodies
setting, and particularly rising, are plagued with problems.
However, I read somewhere of a yachtsman on a long voyage (may have been
round-the-world) who observed stars at their zenith. He managed well enough
to get safely around the Horn!
Others on the list may be able to make more informed comment on this as a
"no instruments" method of celestial navigation.
Yours aye,
Geoffrey Kolbe.
