West about is going to windward which is not my idea of fun (but then,
I'll pass on the "Furious Fifties", too) but it was done routinely by
the packet trade (and anything else that can't or won't transit the
Panama Canal). The alternative is to circumnavigate which wasn't (and
isn't) an option for commercial traffic. Nonetheless, ships were lost
there and will continue to be lost. Again, I recommend reading Hal
Roth or the account of Irving Johnson's Tzu Hang pitchpoling for more
perspective on the subject.
