Bob, you are correct. What you need to remember is that the waypoints that
you are plotting are the "expected" point. You can use normal DR methods to
develop them. The variation and deviation are what you use to determine
just what course the boat is actually following or a fix point. Now knowing
the course you are actually following (or where you actually are), you can
then alter your heading back to the next waypoint.
