Norm,
Firstly; welcome to NY and if you need anything that you can't get in the
city feel free to call me and I'll see if I can help. I work in the Bronx
and sail Evening Star out of New Rochelle on Long Island Sound. And Now
for the rest of the story.
I think that this situation could have been avoided if your call to the
Trooper was anything other than pointing out his faults. Had you opened
the conversation with a question regarding where is, or is this or is the
water safe to drink. He more than likely would not have shifted into bully
mode. But from your story it seemed to me you called him along side only
to advise him of his light being out. Even though you were right, it takes
a big man to swallow being told that the rules they enforce he is in
violation of.
The thing with uniform people is that they wear the badge 24 hours a day
and live the badge 24 hours a day and sleep it and talk it and so on and so
forth. so telling them their job is something they have difficulty with
accepting. I find that the best way to tell them something is to do it
with kid gloves on. The best way of answering them is with softly and none
argumentive. Unfortunate but true. They put their life on the line
everyday for people who abuse them in every way so it makes them
unreasonable.
Just an opinion form one who is extremely grateful his son turned down the
opportunity to become a police officer... ( I sleep better knowing he's not
carrying a gun and wearing a badge).
