Gerrit,
There are scanners that will read 'E' size sheets, the type that house plans
come on. Don't look to buy one, they run into the thousands.
Your best bet is one of the following -- drafting centers, copy centers in
the larger urban locations or an architect. Make a few phone calls. Inquire
as to the file formats that the scanner supports. A direct scan to JPG will
help with the file size. Some scanners do other do not. A single scan will
probably cost $5-7. Obviously for that price one could get new charts.
So I would suggest maybe something a little different. Find a scanner
service that will do it cheap for a bulk price or a fixed price per hour.
Get everybody together for a chart party. Pick the ones that everyone wants.
Take a laptop with you. Have the service load the charts directly to the
laptop via the scanner. Time for another party to share the booty.
Be prepared to use Windows Interserv laptop to laptop. The scanned charts
can get really large, especially in color.
For any NOAA chart there should be no problems with copyright.
Lurker headed back to periscope depth.
