I copied the following from my local paper:
COAST GUARD GIVES UP SEARCH
The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search yesterday for a family reported
missing Aug. 15 while sailing up the East Coast. The Guard said it searched
an 85,000 square-mile area in the Atlantic stretching from Maine to Florida.
Contact was lost more than three weeks ago with Richard and Debbie
Steward, who were sailing with two of their children, Chad, 16, and Mischa,
12. The Stewarts lived in Ludlow Falls, Ohio, near Dayton, before moving to
Florida in March.
They were aboard their 65-foot sailboat Jolly Joyce, planning to sail
from Florida, up the Atlantic Coast to the St. Lawrence Seaway and into
Michigan.
They made it as far as Newport, R.I., before one engine broke down and
the second began to fail. The family left Newport on Aug. 1 without filing a
float plan.
Coast Guard planes from Elizabeth City, N.C, Clearwater, Fla., and Cape
Cod, Mass., took part in the search.
