Battery discussions seem to be like head disccusions - there are about as
many opinions as you know what....

I don't like the idea of one bank. If you accidently deplete that ONE bank
what then - you may have no fall back - really because how often are you
going to remember to charge the starting battery. I had one and it was a
pain in the butt and for that reason I got rid of mine.

An 8D will crank over my motor as a starting battery forever ; and as for
the person who posted the theory of it not "technically" being a deep cycle
battery - that may be BUT in REAL LIFE my gel batteries are 8 years old and
    still ticking!

Mine are in two banks. Before the link2000r "smarts" put in a year ago; I
had two separate sensing leads for charging purposes. I didn't leave the
battery charger on all the time and I let them regularly discharge; and I
switched between banks weekly or biweekly.

It's a pain moving around batteries and rewiring; adding another sensing
lead would be a simplier solution and would give you more time to enjoy your
    sailing. :)
