We have about 4 cu. ft. in one compartment with two lids. This is considered
small by today's standards, but serves two to four people well. The unit is
the A-B Supercold Machine with the evaporator at one end of the box. We don't
use the watercooled option-most cruisers we've met say it doesn't make a big
difference and the pump (expensive) needs frequent replacement. We keep
several bottles of water in and near the evaporator (freezer). We drink a lot
of water and refill the bottles several times a day. We only use the freezer
to keep meat for a few days. Occasionally, we will make some ice for those
special occasions, but usually buy it ashore when we can.
Our machine runs 25-30% of the time in the Caribbean. The box has 6" foam
insulation (8" on the hull side and bottom).
Our solar panels are able to keep the batteries charged without running the
engine. We've seen cruisers with big reefers and separate freezers, but they
run their engine or genset twice a day for an hour or two. We like the quiet!
