I'll jump in here a bit - Rainbow Chaser is a few miles from Jim's boat.
We were up north taking care of some business, working 18 hour days. We
were heading to St. Louis to fly back to Austin and heard a short weather
report, something about a hurricane heading for Corpus! We about panicked!
We called Jim, who confirmed the worst was expected. Long before we could
have gotten there the roads were closed and there was mandatory evacuation.
It's a long story, we had a horrible day, but as you've probably heard,
all turned out ok. Jim checked on Rainbow Chaser for us this morning and
all was well. Whew!! Many thanks, Jim.
As to the hauling, it's a matter of where? There aren't many places to
haul. Most storage yards are only a few feet above sea level anyway, so a
tidal surge would just float the boat away even if you found a place that
could and would haul you . There are not many places all along the coast
to hide. No rivers to go up, no protected places. The only one I know of
is the Victoria Barge Canal, and I expect the faster shrimp boats would
have it filled before we could motor up. In addition, most marinas in this
area just aren't built to handle that sort of weather. There are a few
with berms built around them and doors that close to hold the tidal surge
out, but they are expensive and full of the expensive sportfishers and the
sort of boats that an expensive slip isn't a factor.
Bottom line, if you are on the Texas coast, you just have that risk to
contend with.
