    I've seen it done. However, submersible bilge pumps already suffer a
    substantial drop in performance when they have to lift water up--the higher
    the lift the greater the loss, which is much greater in a centrifugal pump
    than, say, a diaphragm pump. A check valve adds more "friction" to an
    already "lossy" system. Still, many boats have an in-line check valve to
    prevent reverse siphoning when heeled over.
