    Brian,

By all means, try the dorm reefer. If you are going to be motoring you will
    have plenty of electricity.

I hooked up my Circuit City freezer to my Trace inverter via a voltage
sensitive relay built into the Trace. The relay can be set to turn on and
off at user selectable voltages. I have set it to turn on the freezer
whenever the battery voltage indicates the batteries are mostly charged,
either by the main engine alternator or the Trace charging system (via
genset). It seems to be working very well so far. Should put an hour meter
on it but haven't dug out the parts yet. This setup runs the freezer only
when there is the extra juice available to keep from depleting the house
    batteries.

I lived for several years aboard Bandersnatch with no refrigeration. Now we
have a little propane RV unit and use it mostly for leftovers and veggies.

I've been told that a freezer is even more useful than a reefer on a cruising
boat and should be twice the size of the reefer.
