I don't think this is unique to your area by my own experience!!!!!!!
I've had so many jobs done that I got burned on bad.... from a company in
Annapolis rebedding my stauntions for over $2k that leaked right after - to
a engine rebuild that was QUOTED at $6k and 6 weeks and several $k more and
almost a year later when I finally kicked the company off the job and hired
someone else. Oh yeah did I mention my engine had to be rebuilt because I
hired someone to replace my dry stack muffler with an aqua-muffler - and he
forgot the anti-siphon loop on the raw water side. Did I mention that a
local surveyor surveyed the boat right after(pre-purchase survey) and didn't
notice. Last year I had an auto-pilot installed and he: fried the control
head; then on another unit installed the wires incorrectly - that we fixed
underway.
Soooooo many stories. I personally do not think a contract helps!!! What
recourse would there be anyway - suing - hell that is incompatible this
lifestyle...
I DO ALMOST everything myself (except jobs like painting which are toxic
(I'm sensitive) )- since I have been burned by the countly incompentent
people out there. Except now I don't do so much because my boyfriend helps
:)
With a little common sense (and an openness to learn) I do alright and have
gotten very proficient - what better preparation for world cruising - after
all out there on the open sea we have to fend for ourselves.
