I have an Ample 147A alternator, Next Step regulator, EMON II, Heart Freedom 10 inverter, and three 8D Prevailer gels.....fantastic set-up. I bought the Heart first and at that point hadn't really planned the whole thing. If I was to do it again, I'd look at the Trace charger/inverters. I believe they can be controlled by the EMON, which would be the preferred method. As it is, I have two sources of "intelligence" (the Heart and the EMON) trying to make decisions about what's best for my batteries. For the most part, this is not a problem because your shore power life is separate from your cruising. Where it gets a little murky, is when you come in from a cruise and your batteries haven't fully charged (like when at anchor for several days and down 400AH, with only a 2 hour run home). You shut down the engine and plug into shore power, and now the Heart takes over using all its own algorithms. Trouble is, it is not temperature compensated like the Ample system, and the engine!
room (and therefore batteries, in my case) are HOT by that time. Not an ideal situation.
No complaint with the Heart itself, tho'. It has been terrific and trouble-free and even though only rated at 1000W, it starts our full sized fridge (4500W surge) and boils water in our 1500W kettle.
