I don't buy it for a minute. Even if the artists actions were within the law
they were deplorable.
Look at it this way. I'm in the roofing business. Most of my customers don't
know all that much about roofing practices and materials. I could screw
somebody six ways from Sunday and they'd have no idea what happened until
the roof started failing prematurely. And I would not have broken a single
law.
However, I have a conscience and a earnest desire to treat people the way
they should be treated. There are plenty of schlock roofers that have given
the industry a bad rap. I like to sleep well and be able to look at myself
in the mirror every morning.
The other differnce between the artist and his clients vs you and the
publishers is that the publishers are fully aware of the laws and practices
involved.
