    I can second everything Frank says.

    You can try to drain off any transient voltage spikes from the power supply
    wiring to the computer or other device, but then it's the induced voltage,
    either capacativley or inductively coupled, (like a one turn transformer with
    an air core), that will kill your microelectronics. The core may be air and
    not conduct electromagnetic energy well but all you need in the guts of a
    microprocedessor is a few volts higher than the design voltage to arc over
    micro insulation to completely destroy the usefulness of the device. Only
    the Faraday cage will protect it reasonably well.
