For doing email, Jan and I use her 10 cent a minute, Bell South Mobility, 600
minute $90/mo, Nokia 5160 cell phone with, data cord DAR-3 plugged into a
NOK-3 cord, plugged into a 3-Com Megahertz modem model 3CXM556, plugged into
a Winbook XLi laptop. We would like an external antenna, but for now we use
it on deck.
Its a creaky system and it works poorly, but it works if one is persistant
enough. It takes many tries to get connected to AOL via their 800 number.
If we try to use the local numbers, it usually is worse. Yesterday it took
over two hours of re-trying and countless phone dialings to finally download
the liveaboard list traffic and the handful of other incoming messages. Once
connected it often takes 5 to 10 minutes to transfer the traffic. Internet
is out of the question. I have often considered the wireless modem like Jim
Swindel uses but the coverage is spotty, useable mostly around urban areas.
It sucks, but it can work if you keep trying.
