Perhaps the viability of hyraulic differs on the application :).

Flying Cloud is a large, heavy sailing vessel almost 40 ton) and so I think
it is very appropriate with her. Speaking from my personal experience on
her - I find that I do get a good feel response on my hydraulic helm - any
more than it gives and sailing would be a lot of work steering. Over a 10
year period the steering has been very reliable - with the rudder ram and
steering ram needing rebiulding once. Very little maintenance is required -
checking the fluid occasionally. I have an emergency tiller which is easily
    installed in an emergency.
