I'll second Shaun's post - with the caveat that Seattle is both fairly
expensive and lv-ab moorage is getting much more difficult to find (expect
to pay at least $7/ft plus surcharge for a boat new to the area). Away from
Seattle, there are some charming and relatively inexpensive ($3.50 - 5/ft)
in Poulsbo (quaint and <very> svenskihovian), Bremerton (slightly seedy navy
town, but the marina is good and right by a major ferry dock), Port Towsend
(great boatyards and wooden boat scene), La Conner/Anacortes (perfect for
island cruising, but spendy in the summer), and Bellingham.

There are many smallish, friendly, and uncrowded marinas throughout the
Canadian Gulf Islands which will be glad to have you although you may need
to move from time to time as there are some (poorly enforced) length-of-stay
restrictions. Be aware that as you cruise north, facilities get sparse -
especially in the winter, that you'll be competing for dock space with
commercial and fishing boats, and that for small, isolated communities
'transient' live aboards may represent a significant drain on their
resources - be prepared to chip in and help out.

OTOH, I cand think of no more pleasent way to spend several years than
slowly oozing my way north, stopping, exploring, and getting involved along
    the way.

    Cheers

    Jim

May I suggest the Pacific Northwest. As I understand it, there is much more
cruising available. Particularly when you take the Straits of Georgia into
consideration. We have a number of friends who have moved their boats up to
marinas on Vancouver Island where they get the benefit of the stronger US
dollar as well as some of the best cruising in the world. Ideal for the
    size of boat you have.
