If you're anywhere near the flight path of commercial traffic you'd be
better served with a $300 aviation transceiver. For about $400 you can even
get one with a built in VOR that can be useful for coastal navigation. With
an aviation VHF you have no worries about propagation and an aircraft can
immediately relay your distress to ATC which in turn can speedily alert the
CG since those lines of communication are already in place. Since the
aircraft travel at 30-40000 feet a handheld aviation band radio can reach a
long ways. Plus you'll provide some entertainment for some otherwise bored
pilots.
