While in Grenada, a fellow cruiser told me of a discussion he had
participated in where cruisers were debating whether wear of the pivot pin of
CQR anchors would adversely affect their holding ability. They were
unanimously agreed that it was a big factor.
When I returned to the US, I asked the question of S-L. Their answer was "of
course, but more importantly, there is a wear limit figure, which, if
exceeded, may result in unsafe performance." This is not a direct quote, but
that was their drift (no pun).
Having received no reply a month after my query, I again asked for the info,
and received a reply the same day, which follows. (Do they really spell wear
"ware" in the UK?)
>Reference your concern about the maximum safe ware of the pivot pin on your
CQR Anchors.
>We would recommend that a ware factor NOT exceeding 20% of the original pin
diameter is used
>as a guidance to potential replacement. Reduced diameters below this, may
result in the Shank
>and Plough assembly NOT operating correctly and possibly separating under
severe weather conditions.
>45lb CQR Original Pin Diameter is 25.4mm Minimum safe
>diameter 20.3mm.
>75lb CQR Original Pin Diameter is 30.1mm Minimum safe
>diameter 24.1mm.
>Hope this information is what you required, if NOT please contact me direct.
