The debate about GPS and coventional navigation has clogged newsgroups and
lists constantly. As someone who has had first hand dealings with the Nike
missle defense system, Fuif, IFF and the loss of omnis (once over the
everglades), my backup for GPS is not an extra receiver with a case full of
batteries, but DR, coastal piloting, and celestial navigation.
If anyone believes that the US is not going to be in a constant state of
conflict of one kind or other, he or she is naive.
If anyone believes that the US is not going to shut down the GPS, in the
event that a conflict heats up with a nation or terrorist group that has
missle capabilites, he or she is naive.
Thanks to CNN, we all saw the effectiveness of targeting in the Gulf War.
Try to visualize yourself as being a target. That's the capability the GPS
system can provide the enemy.
I do think it's a waste of time to introduce the current error into the
system. If you can deliver the weapon to the target, you certainly have the
capability to build a weapon large enough to compensate for the error.
That's my .02.
If you would like to discuss this with me or flame me, please do so off
list.
Thanks.
