ashore vs aboard - the latter works for me

An interesting thread has been going on regarding the cost of living
aboard vs living ashore. We'll, i'm just about to make the big move,
    T-21 and counting.

Right now, I live in a very expensive part of the country - namely the
burbs of New York City. In manhattan, a decent one bedroom goes for
anything upwards of 1400-1500 a month - if you are lucky.

I live in Jersey City, directly across the Hudson River from lower
manhattan and the twin towers. I currently pay and average of $900 /
month for my small one bedroom brownstone garden apartment (for you non
new yorkers, thats the bottom level of a four story narrow building).

I'm in the process of purchasing an older boat, i.e. 1972 35 foot Sea
Rover houseboat, very good shape and for $16,000. It's quite large and
roomy enough to be a comfortable home for the indetermined future.

My slip fee's will average out to approx $320.00 / month. My
electricity and fuel costs for heat should not be more than $50.00
month. Decidely, the boat will be primarily my home and not a cruiser
so I won't have a lot of other boat expenses.

But the difference between $900 for the apartment and $400 for my own
boat (paid for in a couple of years) seems quite a bit and will let me
live in a comfortable place, close to a large and expensive city. For
me, a decision that highly influenced my decision to live aboard....plus
I just like being on the water!!!
