    Lisa,

Sailing in the LA area is great. The islands make for good weekend and
weeklong trips. Sailing in the winter is very viable.

Marina Del Rey (10 minutes north of LAX) and King Harbor (25-30 minutes
south of LAX) both take liveaboards with no problem. Both Harbors have
numerous marina operators. Marina Del Rey has 6000 slips with lots of
vacancies. King Harbor is much smaller and less accessible.

I don't know where you are coming from but you will likely be shocked at the
slip fees. In MDR they are about 12-13 a foot a month for a 45-50' slip.
Liveaboard fees are as much as 55% (not a typo) more. Many people are
sneakaboards and many of the operators don't care. The harbor commission
has recently enacted an inspection rule for all liveaboards that checks for
basic seaworthiness, holding tanks, and safety equipment. This is an effort
to eliminate the floating hovels (not floating homes) that have sprung up
recently. If you can sail your boat here and have a holding tank, the
inspection is no big deal. Hope this helps. I would be glad to provide
more info as I have a boat in Marina Del Rey. My email is
