John, thanks for sharing your knowledge and insights. I've a couple of
questions:
1) Why was the USCG originally given these extraordinary powers in 1946?
2) Why do they still exist (the powers, not the USCG)? Have there been any
organized efforts to repeal them?
3) What can we (as livaboards) do to regain our 4th amendment rights?
I was originally uninterested and annoyed that this thread had gone on so
long, but now I find myself wondering what I can do to fix this problem. It
is true, as someone said, that you should "know the rules and who's dealing",
but it seems like we have lost a basic right simply because we live on boat
which could be used to transport contraband.
I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.
