Ken, at this years broadcaster's convention there were a number of LED
production lighting units. The new technology is amazing!
NILA showed some portable kits that had lamps so bright you simply could
not use them without a diffusion screen on it. Another company, Zylight,
had a compact, dimmable LED with switchable Tungsten, Daylight, or Gel
modes (no filters required). The lights can be dialed into a variety of
color temperatures to match other lighting or environments.
There was also a new battery shown, whose name I cannot find at this
moment, enviro friendly, that can be charged to 90% capacity in 5
minutes, and after 5000 discharge/recharge cycles will still charge to
85% capacity. Granted it is a small battery (size of two fists) of the
type we use for powering professional video cameras, but it is an
example of what is happening in the technology. Some day we will be able
to replace all these SLA, Gel, GM batteries for something smaller, more
green, and faster recharging. Of course, the first few on the shelves
will be extremely pricey. ;)
