Why don't you want to believe the Rarmarine and Garmin manuals. They are essentially saying the same thing. The only difference between what the two are saying is that Garmin says you only have to connect the NMEA out and ground signal because the autopilot only needs to communicate one way with the GPS.
Try it, you can't hurt it.

Subject: lv-ab: Another Auto-Pilot Question
Actually it's a Tiller-Pilot, Raymarine ST2000+.
Want to connect my aging Garmin 162 to it.
Raymarine manual says to connect NMEA in/out from Garmin.
Garmin manual says to connect the NEMA out and the ground wire to Tiller-Pilot.
Other people have told me I need to use a Raymarine interface to get it to operate.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
