Thanks for the responses. I removed the 1/4"?teflon, installed plain 3/16". Letting it drip a bit for now, is running cooler.

Will tighten and?stop the dripping entirely?before the temperatures plummet. A few years ago?a bilge pump?hose froze during an extremely cold period.?

    Subject: lv-ab: Stuffing Box question

    Hi all-

I just installed a new stuffing box on my SS shaft. Put 1/4" teflon packing in it (vendor told me to use 1/4"). After running about 30 min I felt the box, it was very warm, almost too hot to the touch. I loosened the box a bit, ran it again for 30 min, felt it again, was still very warm.

This is my first experience with teflon packing.

Is this normal? I'm thinking of replacing the packing with 3/16".

    Thanks
