I will expand on this one. I used to be a member of two yahoo-based
lists: the local freecycle and an offshoot. Even when I was getting
emails, yahoo kept suspending my email address, supposedly for email
bounces, although I never had this happen to any of the dozen or so
other lists I subscribe to. About every week, I would receive an email
from yahoo stating that "due to bouncing email blah blah blah, click
here to reactivate your account". After doing this it would work for
a few days. Some months back those emails became less and less frequent
and no matter how I try now, I can't resubscribe to those two lists.
I did create a yahoo account a long time ago, but joined those lists
through the email interface, which is probably no longer possible.
I suspect that old account has been deleted. I wonder if yahoo deletes
(and forces you to re-create) old accounts that it deems not useful to
its advertisers.
I run my browsers behind an ad/invasive code/cookie blocker proxy, so
maybe that is why I'm having trouble with yahoo. I wonder if the yahoo
web sites have some smart code that prevents the pages from displaying
properly or working correctly if the server detects that the ads are not
getting through.
I don't want to go through the hoops of creating another yahoo account
to receive email from a list, so I guess I'll have to do without those
lists.

Finally, I haven't said so before but I fully support the option that
Sam/Vern have provided. Thank you!
