Vern,
Thanks for the fast work. I'm pretty sure this is a foolish question, please don't be insulted, but: Have you tested the new system in a realistic way? I guess you have some wiggle room since this will a completely different list (as far as the computers are concerned) so this original list can remain operative for some time after the new one goes live - so you have a fall back position if weird problems occur.
I have a couple of thoughts which you may have considered already, but: <g>
1) I don't access the list everyday, and sometimes not every week. Unless I'm the only tardy one, that means some of those "dead" names may wake up 6' under some day and be mighty disappointed. For example, I was gone for 3 months this summer. If this discussion had started the day I left town and you brought up the new list 4 weeks later and then killed the old server 8 weeks after that, I'd arrive home and find the list dead. So it may be wise to close this list with several messages to every member explaining the new address and sign-up procedure. And/or it may be possible to setup an automatic boiler plate bounce reply at the old address to inform any senders that it's no longer active and how they can resubscribe. Of course, it needs testing once in a while to verify that the bounce reply it's still working.
2) "Cut-over" is often exciting and can be frustrating. I would think it a good idea to plan on using this existing forum as the communications channel for all problems until everybody who mists the glass here is accounted for on the other side. Perhaps the old server can be set to bounce any message without the word "LvAbd Relocated" in the subject line to discourage conversation on the old server.
3) Finally, I assume you're in close contact with Stephen to coordinate his big day of freedom - just to minimize surprises at this party. To herd all members into the new corral, the old server needs to be cut off completely at some not-to-distant point and it would be good to decide how/when. Exit strategy you know - good to have one b4 you commit the troops!
Cheers, Rufus
