First, thanks everyone for all the input. Background: Rebedding windows in 2000 Leopard 38 Catamaran, new to me.
Next, the job is going poorly. I ordered Dow Corning 795 from Water Damage Protection.com, as I have worked with it before but the date codes were illegible, could be 2006 or 2008. A test bead that has not set in 8 hours indicates outdated caulk.
Next, removing window was easy, it was not bonded to window back, only the edges, possibly window was half recaulked at Moorings Charters. Caulk was L shape approx 1" wide by 1/2-3/4 deep. Center of caulk was uncured tar like mess, balance was very tough, well adhered to fiberglass, after 4 hours work, most is gone but surface is not yet clean. Took sample of uncured caulk to local paint store. They think it is Butyl, Xylene dissolves this, can I use Xylene on Gel Coat?
I am going to remove all caulk but may have limited choices as to locally available replacement caulk. Choices may be limited to GE Silicone II or BoatLife Silicone, possibly more 795 if the dealer offers to overnight freight it. Local glass shop advises use ANY silicone.
Please offer advice on these caulks. Also, anyone know of caulk dealers in upstate NY?
    Thanks
    Lee Haefele

      Lee,

What kind of plastic are the windows made of? Plexiglas, Lexan?

I need to rebed some large (48" X 16" oval) plastic side windows. These are
mounted in a recessed area in caulk with a 3/8" foam tape backing, no screws
or trim. I am looking for a source for Dow Corning 795 caulk, reputed to be
the best, but may need to settle for locally available GE Silicone II.
Can anyone that has done this before advise me on how the job will go?
Will the foam backing tape tear out with the window and need replacement?
Any special process to remove the window other than slicing the caulk with a
      utility knife?
