    All,

    Following mostly written by Jan...

Last Saturday evening a squall ripped through the anchorage in Gloucester
    inner harbor.

Two sailboats next to us began to drag. One finally hooked its anchor but
was very close and dead ahead of our neighbor, Crystal Spray, just behind
us. No one was aboard either boat.

We were on deck when I saw the boat next to us, Coriolas take off heading
for Crystal Spray's bowsprit. David, the Spray's owner had just replaced
the bowsprit due to a storm in Boston. We alerted the Spray and jumped in
our dinghy just as the runaway boat started to drag again. David also
jumped in his dink and fended off Coriolas from hitting his bowsprit
until Norm could get aboard and start the engine. (Luckily the key was in
the ignition! ) David came aboard too and pulled up the anchor while I
found a pole to fend off any more close encounters. We then headed for the
mooring field with Norm driving but the winds picked up and the rain became
fierce. We missed two moorings. David went back to his boat to close his
port holes. Norm and I stayed on the runaway vessel, turned it into the
wind and took her out beyond the inner harbor anchorage area until the
storm passed. When the storm calmed we headed back to the moorings and
grabbed the first available. Whew!!! What an afternoon. We were all soaked
to the bone but grateful no one was injured and no boats were damaged.

    Hugs,

    Jan

PS - We were extremely fortunate that the dragging boat's owner had left
the key in his switch. When the owners returned from shore about an hour
after the squall passed they thanked us for our efforts and gave us two
    bottles of nice wine.
