The monitor plugs into the external monitor connection on the back of
the laptop. I purchased a monitor extension cable and ran it from
    lower to upper helm.

The monitor has a brightness rating of 300 cd/m2, pretty typical these
days. I have no problem seeing in anything but direct sunlight. We do
have a hardtop, so the upper helm is shaded most of the day. For times
when I do have difficulty seeing the monitor, I have a homemade
    cardboard "hood" that I use.
