Generally speaking a display that is to be used
in the daylight (not in direct sunlight) needs to
have a brightness of about 500 nits( candelas/sq
cm I think).
My LCD monitor has a rating of 300 and it seems
more than bright enough for below deck usage
(sometimes I have to turn the brightness down for
comfortable viewing) but I am sure that outside it
would need extensive 'hooding'.
If I was going to put a display in my cockpit I
would enclose it in a polycarbonate container with
a fan blowing air up from the bottom for cooling.
The expense of a 'waterproof' LCD is just
outrageous and I see no reason to waste my money.
