    I have a Velvet Drive, 72C, I think.

The case should not have any pressure. I would remove the breather fitting
    and clean it out.

My dipstick is a threaded plug, it cannot pop out.

I did notice engine surge once. At first I thought I was hearing things,
but after the third time I payed attention and checked things out. The oil
level was indeed low. The nut securing the output flange was loose.
Further evidence was a spray of oil in the plane of the coupling. Adding
oil got us to port without loosing the transmission, then I removed the
coupling and tightened the nut. We have had no further problem here.

It really pays to pay close attention to odd sounds etc, like this. The
last time I did not was when the discharge hose came off the genset
seawater pump (reported on the list) when the hose clamp failed. The hose
still sat on top of the fitting and enough water went through the heat
exchanger and exhaust hose, but the rest of it sprayed the engine room
thoroughly. I did notice that the sound of the water coming through the
genset exhaust hose (which runs through the living quarters) was a little
odd, but chose to ignore it. My Bad! My Mess!
