Take manufacturer's claims with a generous helping of disbelief.
Many of their claims may be true being tested by their employees in their
lab under ideal conditions, but in the field performance is often not as
wonderful. In a war of specs vs. price, best case figures are the only
ones that count. I find it advantageous to pay up front and get the unit
that is the next step stronger that what I think will do.
For example; after experience, I made it a policy to never use a sea cock
less than 1 1/2". While that may be overkill when first installed, a
barnacle or oyster will often reduce the opening available.
Many devices I have aboard have been victim of the 80% rule. The suits
will often push a product out the door when it is 80% ready for market in
order to get the cash flow going. A prime example are my two KISS wind
generators. I have just finished "finishing" the azimuth bearings. The
originals were plastic parts that were too loose and caused the machines to
rattle annoyingly on their masts. I had machined a ss cup to fit in the
Fiberglas housings and installed boat trailer bearings (two roller bearings
and a seal for $15). I had a properly sized post made to fit the id of the
bearings and the mast along with a couple of other parts. Now the units
work as they should but it cost me over $800 to finish the job for the two
units. If KISS had done it properly from the start it would have been
much, much cheaper.
