The pump I use is a March LC-3CP-MD, 115 vac, 2.0 amp. This pump is a
centrifugal type with all plastic housing and impeller driven by a magnet
spun by the motor so there is no shaft into the pump chamber or seal. The
Achilles heel of the pump is a metal pipe from the input to the output of
the pump and passing through the motor to cool it. If and when this pipe
becomes fouled with biological material the motor will overhead and fail.
Perhaps this can be prevented by periodic flushing with acid. Some folks
have cussed them roundly on the List.
The solution might be to find a pump using the same sort of magnetic drive,
eliminating shaft and seal, but with a motor that can operate continuously
without the cooling pipe. Perhaps a separate pump and motor arrangement.
I suggest you contact DEPCO Pump Company, (www.depco-pump.com) and ask
their advice. I buy most of my pumps from them.
The March pumps I use are the second item listed in their marine catalog so
they may be the most popular at least.
