I have had good results with a simple stainless CB whip about 8 feet long fed by an antenna tuner on 80 thru 10. It will not tune on 160.

A good ground plane is needed for a counterpoise. A vertical antenna is essentially half a dipole sticking up in the air and needs the other half (that sticks down into the ground or water) to work properly.

Fortunately my ferro boat is mostly steel so I have a good built-in ground plane.

    To All,
I recently purchased a ssb on e-Bay (and tuner) and am now looking at antenna options. My boat, Jacob Andrew, is a 36' ketch. The rope antenna shown at www.ropeantenna.com seems possible. Has anyone used these or have thoughts on them. All advice is welcomed and appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Emory
