One cargo APL would not carry on their container ships was charcoal.
The story I heard was that one dark night the lookout on the bridge wing
asked the mate on watch to step out side with him for a moment. Indicating
the stack of containers nearby the lookout asked the mate if he saw
anything unusual. He did. One of the containers was glowing red. It
contained charcoal. They rigged fire hoses to keep the adjacent containers
cool until they could remove it.
One of my duties was making up lists of dangerous cargoes for the ports we
visited. Incense was considered a dangerous cargo, (as was raw cotton).
