I had the opposite experience and it was one of the best in my life. I had a Catalina 30 in San Diego for 5 years in charter and the company was excellent and the boat was always treated well. We lived in Colorado at the time and it all worked well. I believe if you buy a boat that was in charter from a good company the boat will be in better condition than the average boat because a good company services the boat regularly and it gets used and maintained. I also believe a bad company will have the opposite effect. So it all depends on the company.

Subject: Re: lv-ab: chartering/leasing your boat to another entity
We had our boat in a charter service for 5 years ... bad idea. Our boat was used and abused. Remember the saying ... drive it like a rent a car ... well, most people did just that.
We were told that we would not get rich putting our boat in charter service, but we weren't told we would spend more money repairing it.
There are some companies that do better at taking care of your boat, but I do not know who they are.
My suggestion, if you want a boat, but can't afford one, don't buy one and put it in charter service, it won't pay. The damage people do will cost you more money than you will earn.
