A guy I know modified/welded a bracket to a Cobb charcoal grill and had good results with it.
Another cut out some thin sheet SS panels and wire welded them together, he set it up so he could use either gas or charcoal.
If you like the gas Magma with the hinged lid, and can't build your own, get one, remove the gas burner and retrofit it with a tray to hold/burn charcoal.
If you build one, think about your grill top, and what size pans you may want to sit on it. If you want to add sections to it later for a smoker or rotisserie, etc.
Man it is too early for me to be thinking so much about bbqs and grilling....hahaha.

Subject: lv-ab: charcoal instead of gas
Anyone know of a good charcoal grill >for a sailboat. Google isn't helping and I don't like cooking with gas.
Magma makes the hinged lids only for their gas models. The coal model's
lid hangs on a lanyard and looks like a banging clanging mess waiting to happen.
Anyone know of a good coal grill? I have a small sloop and wanted to railmount ideally.
Last year I used a no.10 can clamped to the stern rail with some strategic holes
drilled (hammered) top and bottom (top because my coffee pan fit tightly inside the rim) and
it worked surprisingly well- but not big enough for any good meals. Just coffee
and chowder.
appreciate any tips for good old coal!
