The danger of stray currents in the water is defined by how salty the water
is relative to body tissue. The electrical current will generally travel on
the path of least resistance. A swim in the ocean is fair protection during
a lightening storm - the salty water acting as a Faraday cage in the event
of a lightening strike. In 'fresh' water, stray currents will 'stun' fish,
crabs and worms and is employed for live capture at times. Brackish water
is variable and sometimes stratified - perhaps giving no ready sign (to may
understanding) until it is too late.
