For a really inexpensive and foolproof bilge alarm that takes only a
couple minutes to install, HOME DEPOT sells a great thats cheap!
Only its a little basement water alarm that needs no special wiring
and has its own independent electrical system <a nine volt battery> .
It approximately 4" x 2" x 2" and is all plastic with a built in
screaming high pitch alarm and a cord with two sensors that is about
4 feet long, so you do not have to have the box down by the water.
Ours saved our day when it went off following a bilge pump failure a
couple years ago. Cost about $13.
I think they have them in the sump pump area in a lot of the hardware
stores. Just remember to change battery every year and also test it
periodically, which you can do by wetting 2 fingers and holding them
on the contact.
