My electrically assisted bicycle (still in the
shop) would work as a generator. The way the two
motors are set up, when you want to go slow the
motors are connected to the battery in series,
when you want full speed they are connected to the
battery in parallel.
Thus to generate power you push the switch into
the 'slow' position and start pedaling. As soon as
you get the rear tire turning faster than the
motor would spin it with no load you start
charging the battery. I use this as a braking
system all the time while riding. It slows the
bike down to about 4 MPH then you have to apply
the bike brakes and release the motor switch.
Personally I would never even consider doing this
to get exercise or charge a dead battery. That is
WAY too much like work!!!
