    Problem solved!

Someone on the list suggested it might have been an Osprey hawk since they're known to breed in this area this time of the year. So I googled it and those guys have wingspans of 4-6 feet and the bird which flew out from under the dodger had a wingspan of closer to 18".

I called the local wildlife sanctuary (part of the National Audebon Society) and described the nest and the bird and was told to not worry about it! First of all, they suggested that since I showed up and the bird flew away and didn't return during the 15 minutes we were on board the birds had probably just abandoned the nest.

The suggested that I pick up the eggs and nest and move it on shore to some bush or something. According to them, there would only be one of two possibilities at that point. Either the birds would find and return to the nest to hatch the eggs or they wouldn't, in which case some land critter would discover it and eat the eggs.

I was told that if the birds abandoned the nest (or I removed it) it's no big deal since they would just build another nest somewhere and lay more eggs. As they put it, it's just another part of the cycle of life and not to lose sleep over it.

So tomorrow I go back out and will move the nest and eggs to the top of a bush in the boatyard.

Whew! I was worried for a while but as long as the Audebon Society says it's okay then I'll sleep at night knowing I wasn't throwing a monkey wrench into Nature's plan!

If the Wildlife Sanctuary recovery folks say it's okay I'm assuming they're the experts.

And I thought I had a problem when a sparrow made his nest in the boom end. Their eggs have hatched and now we watch the comings and goings.
Well isn't sailing about becoming more aware of our environment?
