K,
I have tried several times under several different conditions to use the
YachtBoy400 along with a USB based demodulator with its accompanying PC
software, but never with any success. I have, however, been able to
get my SSB to work just fine, so I don't believe it is related to the
available signal quality, but perhaps in something related more to
either the equipment or the user. I've tried various bands, both with
and without the external antenna, using various orientations of said
antenna, and several different laptops as the processing component, yet
still no joy.
I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but any additional insight
you might provide would be greatly appreciated. In the meantime, I'd be
reluctant to recommend this approach to anyone else. I had hoped to
stow just such a system in my man overboard bag, but at this point it
sits on a shelf instead.
R
p.s. I would strongly recommend an ICOM 802, a PactorIII modem, a
General Class HAM license, SailMail software, a 23' whip antenna and
twelve square feet of copper mesh laid into the hull as a counterpoise,
but that is a very expensive alternative. :-)
