Boy were we really looking forward to sailing this weekend but 'twas not to be.
We got to the boat about noon today. As we climbed from the launch onto the boat I notices a "hawk" looking bird fly out from under the dodger. I didn't think much of it and went down below to start stowing stuff when my wife yelled that there was a nest under the dodger!
Sure enough, I stuck my head up and nestled in my coiled halyards right behind the rope clutch there was a feathers nest with 6 eggs in it!!!!!
We didn't touch it so there's not going to be any human scent on it or the eggs so presumably the mother will return.
I've got a call into the local Fish and Game folks to find out what to do. A friend who works with a local animal rescue organization said the without any definitive identification (it looked like a hawk of some kind but I can't be sure) there's a real possibility that I'm looking at a 4-5 week gestation period before they hatch!
This happened over the past two weeks since I was out there two weeks ago and didn't notice it.
I hate like hell to disturb the nest but I'm damned sure I don't want to lose use of the boat for the next month!
Anyone have any suggestions?
